Isolation gown and surgical gown are personal protective equipment commonly used in hospitals. But in the process of clinical supervision, we often find that medical staff are confused about these two gowns. The editor will talk about the similarities and differences between these two from three aspects by collected information.
Isolation gown: Protective equipment used for medical staff to avoid being contaminated by blood, body fluids, and other infectious substances when in contact with patients, or to protect patients from infection. The isolation gown is a two-way isolation to prevent the medical staff from being infected or contaminated and the patient from being infected.
Surgical gowning:
The surgical gowning plays a two-way protective role during the operation. First, the surgical gowning establishes a barrier between the patient and the medical staff, reducing the probability of the contact of medical staff with the patient's blood or other body fluids and other potential sources of infection during the operation; secondly, the surgical gowning can block the spread of various bacteria colonized/adhered to the surface of medical staff's skin or clothing to surgical patients, effectively avoiding cross-infection of multi-drug resistant bacteria. Therefore, the barrier function of surgical gowning is regarded as the key to reducing the risk of infection during surgery.
Isolation gown:
1. When medical staff contact patients with infectious diseases spread by contact.
2. When patients are subject to protective isolation, such as diagnosis, treatment, and nursing of patients with extensive burns and bone marrow transplantation.
3. When medical staff may be splashed by the patient's blood, body fluids, secretions and excrement.
4. To enter key departments such as ICU, NICU, and protective wards, whether to wear isolation gowns or not should be decided according to the purpose of entry and the contact status of the medical staff.
Surgical gowning: it is strictly sterilized and used for invasive treatment of patients in a specialized operating room.
Isolation gown:
Isolation gown is usually made of non-woven materials, or combined with materials with better impermeability, such as plastic films. Through a variety of non-woven fiber joining technology to make it have integrity and toughness. Isolation gown should be able to cover the torso and all clothing to form a physical barrier for the transmission of microorganisms and other substances. It should also have impermeability, abrasion resistance and tear resistance.
Surgical gown: It should be impermeable, sterile, in one-piece, without a cap. Generally, the cuffs of surgical gowns are elastic, which are easy to wear and is helpful for wearing sterile gloves. It is not only used to protect medical staff from being contaminated by infectious substances, but also can be used to protect the sterile state of exposed surgical sites during surgery.
